In a decisive opening matchup for the 2026 season, the New Orleans Saints defeated the Detroit Lions 27-6. Both teams were looking to establish an early edge in the year, but it was the Saints who showcased their dominance on the road. Saints quarterback Tyler Shough led the charge with an impressive performance, throwing for 244 yards and a touchdown, while also connecting with Jordyn Tyson, who racked up 109 receiving yards. Travis Etienne Jr. contributed significantly on the ground, adding 71 rushing yards to the Saints' balanced offensive attack. The combination of Shough’s efficiency and Tyson’s big-play ability proved too much for the Lions’ defense. Defensively, the Saints were able to stifle the Lions' offense, with Martin Emerson Jr. making a pivotal interception that shifted momentum in New Orleans' favor. Although Jack Campbell had a strong game for Detroit, leading with 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks, the Lions struggled to contain the Saints' offensive firepower. The turning point came in the second quarter when Emerson's interception led to a touchdown drive, putting the Saints up 14-3 and solidifying their control of the game.
