The New York Giants narrowly defeated the Washington Commanders 22-17 in a closely contested Week 5 matchup of the 2026 season. With playoff implications looming, the Giants solidified their position in the standings while the Commanders struggled to keep pace in a competitive division. Giants quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. was the standout performer, throwing for 274 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his ability to make big plays when it mattered most. Derrick Henry contributed significantly on the ground, adding 82 rushing yards to the mix, while Dont'e Thornton Jr. emerged as a reliable target with 111 receiving yards, helping to fuel the Giants' offense throughout the game. On the defensive side, Malachi Lawrence was a game-changer for New York, recording three sacks and consistently putting pressure on the Commanders' offense. The turning point came late in the fourth quarter when Lawrence's third sack led to a critical turnover on downs, allowing the Giants to take control and secure the victory. Washington's Riley Moss led his team in tackles with six, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Giants' defensive intensity.
