In a commanding season opener, the San Francisco 49ers topped the Los Angeles Rams 48-27, showcasing their offensive firepower and solidifying their status as a team to watch in the 2026 season. With both teams looking to set the tone early, the 49ers made a strong statement on the road. Brock Purdy led the 49ers' offensive assault, throwing for three touchdowns and keeping the Rams' defense on its heels all game long. However, the true star was Christian McCaffrey, who not only rushed for a staggering 174 yards but also added 119 receiving yards to his impressive performance. His versatility proved crucial in establishing the 49ers' dominance on both the ground and through the air. Defensively, the 49ers were relentless, particularly through the efforts of Dre Greenlaw, who snagged two interceptions, shifting the momentum in favor of San Francisco. Gracen Halton also made his mark with a sack, contributing to the pressure on Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who finished with 391 passing yards but struggled to find consistency. The turning point came midway through the third quarter when Greenlaw's second interception led to a quick touchdown, effectively putting the game out of reach for Los Angeles.
