In a decisive opening game of the 2029 season, the Washington Commanders topped the Atlanta Falcons with a final score of 34-13. With both teams eager to set the tone for the year, the Commanders showcased their dominance, leaving the Falcons searching for answers as they look to rebound in Week 2. Leading the charge for Washington was quarterback Drake Maye, who threw for an impressive 294 yards and four touchdowns, demonstrating why he’s considered one of the league's rising stars. His connection with receiver Andrew Marsh, who racked up 92 receiving yards, proved pivotal in establishing a commanding offense. On the other side, Atlanta's James Cook III shone brightly with 107 rushing yards, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with Washington's aerial assault. Defensively, the Commanders were formidable, with Matayo Uiagalelei recording two sacks, disrupting the Falcons' offensive rhythm. Sonny Styles added a crucial interception, further sealing the game for Washington. The turning point came in the second quarter when Maye's touchdown pass to Marsh extended their lead to 17 points, a gap that Atlanta couldn't close as the game wore on.
