In a tightly contested season opener, the New England Patriots narrowly defeated the Washington Commanders 20-17. Both teams were eager to set the tone for the 2027 season, but it was the Patriots who emerged victorious, delivering a promising start to their campaign. Drake Maye shone for New England, throwing for 252 yards and leading his team effectively down the field. Jayden Daniels kept the Commanders competitive with two touchdown passes, showcasing his ability to respond under pressure. Meanwhile, Terry McLaurin was a standout receiver for Washington, racking up 178 receiving yards and proving to be a constant threat throughout the game. Defensively, the game turned when Jeremiah Cooper intercepted a pass, providing a crucial momentum shift for the Patriots. Although the Commanders' defense had its moments, with Junior Colson leading in tackles and Joshua Josephs contributing two sacks, they were unable to contain the Patriots' offense when it mattered. This interception ultimately sealed the win for New England, highlighting the importance of defensive plays in a closely fought matchup.
