In a thrilling matchup, the Anchorage Avengers topped the San Antonio Desperados 33-21, improving their record to 2-1 while handing the Desperados their second straight loss of the season. The stakes were high for both teams as they sought to establish momentum early in the 2026 campaign, but it was Anchorage that emerged victorious on their home turf. Baker Mayfield led the charge for the Avengers, throwing for an impressive 322 yards and showcasing his precision as he connected with his receivers effectively. Christian McCaffrey added a solid ground game with 99 rushing yards, while the Desperados' Fernando Mendoza countered with two touchdown passes, but it ultimately wasn't enough to keep pace with the Avengers’ offensive firepower. Jameson Williams stood out for San Antonio, racking up 122 receiving yards, but his efforts were overshadowed by Anchorage's balanced attack. Defensively, the Avengers made a significant impact, particularly through Will McDonald IV, who recorded 2.5 sacks, disrupting Mendoza’s rhythm and applying constant pressure. The turning point came in the second half when Anchorage's defense forced a crucial turnover, leading to a touchdown that extended their lead and effectively sealed the game. With a strong performance on both sides of the ball, the Avengers demonstrated their potential as serious contenders this season.
