In a thrilling season opener, the Detroit Lions narrowly defeated the New Orleans Saints 34-27, kicking off the 2026 campaign with a dramatic showcase. Both teams battled fiercely, but the Lions ultimately held off a late charge from the Saints to secure the victory at home. Tyler Shough shined for New Orleans, throwing for 312 yards and three touchdowns, proving to be a formidable force under center. Despite the loss, Shough's standout performance kept the Saints competitive, with Jordyn Tyson also making waves by racking up 167 receiving yards. However, it was Jahmyr Gibbs who led the Lions on the ground with 99 rushing yards, providing crucial support to the passing attack. Defensively, the Lions were anchored by Jessie Bates III, who made eight total tackles to help stifle the Saints' offensive momentum. The turning point came late in the fourth quarter when the Lions made a critical stop, allowing them to preserve their lead and seal the game. While Nathan Shepherd recorded a sack for New Orleans, it wasn’t enough to turn the tide, as Detroit’s defense rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
