In a thrilling opener to the 2026 season, the New Orleans Saints topped the Detroit Lions with a final score of 45-31. As both teams aimed to set the tone for the year, the Saints showcased their offensive prowess, proving they are contenders right out of the gate. Tyler Shough led the charge for New Orleans, delivering a stellar performance with 365 passing yards and five touchdown passes. Running back James Cook III complemented the aerial attack with a robust 131 rushing yards, making it difficult for the Lions' defense to keep pace. Despite the Lions' efforts, it was the Saints' dynamic offense that took center stage. Defensively, the Saints made crucial plays that contributed to their victory, with Jonas Sanker leading the team in tackles with five. Kaden Elliss added pressure with a timely sack, while the Lions' D.J. Reed managed to snag an interception, providing a brief spark for Detroit. However, the turning point came when the Saints capitalized on a crucial turnover, allowing them to stretch their lead and ultimately secure the win.
