In a thrilling Week 1 matchup, the New Orleans Saints topped the Detroit Lions with a final score of 31-23. This hard-fought victory sets the stage for both teams as they look to establish themselves early in the 2026 season. The Saints showcased their offensive prowess, while the Lions fought valiantly but fell short in the end. Saints quarterback Fernando Mendoza led the charge through the air, racking up 241 passing yards and orchestrating key drives that kept the Lions’ defense on its heels. Meanwhile, Jared Goff of the Lions threw for two touchdowns, but it was Derrick Henry's commanding performance on the ground—113 rushing yards—that kept Detroit competitive. Amon-Ra St. Brown also made his mark with 80 receiving yards, highlighting the Lions' offensive potential. Defensively, the Saints turned the tide with a standout performance from Kool-Aid McKinstry, who not only recorded four total tackles but also snagged two crucial interceptions that shifted momentum. Lorenzo Styles Jr. contributed with a sack that added to the pressure on Goff throughout the game. The Saints' ability to capitalize on defensive opportunities proved pivotal, particularly in the second half when McKinstry's second interception sealed the victory, allowing New Orleans to maintain control and secure the win.
