In a tightly contested matchup, the Washington Commanders narrowly defeated the San Francisco 49ers 17-14 in Week 5 of the 2027 season. Both teams were seeking to solidify their playoff aspirations, making this victory crucial for Washington as they aim to establish themselves in the NFC. Jayden Daniels led the Commanders' offense with a solid performance, throwing for 166 yards. Brock Purdy of the 49ers managed to find the end zone with one touchdown pass, but it was the rushing attack led by Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who tallied 59 yards on the ground, that helped sustain drives and keep the pressure on the San Francisco defense. Stefon Diggs was a key target, contributing 57 receiving yards and keeping the chains moving. Defensively, the Commanders made their mark by stifling the 49ers' offense at crucial moments. Max Goddard recorded a team-high nine total tackles, while Jelani McDonald added a sack to disrupt Purdy's rhythm. The game-changing play came when Trey Amos intercepted a pass, shifting momentum in favor of Washington and sealing the victory in the closing minutes.
