In a thrilling season opener, the New Orleans Saints topped the Detroit Lions 38-24, kicking off the 2026 season with a decisive victory. The Saints showcased their offensive prowess, while the Lions struggled to keep pace, despite a strong individual performance from their quarterback. Jared Goff shone for Detroit, throwing for an impressive 333 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to secure a win. On the ground, Travis Etienne Jr. led the Saints with 66 rushing yards, effectively complementing the passing attack and helping to maintain offensive momentum. The matchup featured standout performances, but the Saints' balanced offense proved to be too much for the Lions to overcome. Defensively, the Saints were able to apply pressure, highlighted by Christen Miller's sack, which disrupted Goff's rhythm. The Lions' defense, anchored by Roger McCreary's four tackles and Jack Campbell's interception, struggled to contain the Saints' scoring drives. The turning point came late in the second quarter when New Orleans scored back-to-back touchdowns, creating a gap that the Lions couldn't close as the game progressed.
