In a thrilling season opener, the New Orleans Saints topped the Detroit Lions 27-17, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting 2026 campaign. With both teams eager to make a statement, the Saints showcased their offensive prowess and defensive grit to secure the victory on the road. Leading the charge for New Orleans was quarterback Tyler Shough, who threw for two touchdowns, while Travis Etienne Jr. added a solid ground game with 79 rushing yards. Despite the Lions' Jared Goff posting impressive numbers with 258 passing yards, the Saints' balanced attack proved too much to handle, allowing them to maintain control throughout the contest. Defensively, Kaden Elliss stood out for the Saints, recording 2.5 sacks and disrupting the Lions' rhythm in critical moments. The turning point came in the second quarter when Elliss's pressure forced a crucial turnover that shifted momentum in favor of New Orleans. The Lions' defense, led by Jack Campbell's nine tackles, fought hard but ultimately could not contain the Saints' offensive onslaught as the game progressed.
