In a thrilling season opener, the Tokyo Dragons secured a 28-16 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, kicking off the 2027 season with a statement win. Both teams entered the game with high hopes, but the Dragons proved too formidable on their home turf. Leading the charge for Tokyo was quarterback Cam Newton, who threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his dual-threat ability. He connected with Anthony Gould for a standout performance, as Gould racked up 105 receiving yards, becoming a key target in crucial moments. Though the rushing game was more subdued, Jeremiyah Love contributed with 44 yards on the ground, adding balance to the Dragons' offensive attack. Tokyo's defense played a pivotal role in the outcome, led by Jarrian Jones with four total tackles, and a critical interception by Markquese Bell that shifted momentum in the second half. The turning point came late in the third quarter when Malachi Lawrence sacked the Buccaneers' quarterback, forcing a turnover that allowed the Dragons to extend their lead. With a solid combination of offensive firepower and defensive resilience, the Dragons set a strong tone for the season ahead.
