The Philadelphia Eagles opened the 2026 season in emphatic fashion, rolling past the Washington Commanders 42-20 at home. A divisional matchup that so often turns into a slugfest instead became a showcase, with Philadelphia pulling away and never looking back. For a Commanders team hoping to announce itself early in the NFC East race, Week 1 offered a harsh reminder of the gap it still has to close. Jalen Hurts set the tone, carving up Washington for 338 passing yards and four touchdown throws in a performance that had the Eagles' offense humming from the opening series. Dontayvion Wicks was the primary beneficiary, piling up 135 receiving yards and consistently finding space down the field. Saquon Barkley did the dirty work underneath, leading all rushers with 68 yards and keeping Washington's front honest enough to open the play-action looks Hurts feasted on. Balance, tempo, and finishing drives were the story for Philadelphia. Washington's defense was not without its moments. Mike Sainristil was everywhere, racking up a game-high 11 tackles and coming down with the game's lone interception, while Odafe Oweh registered the only sack of the afternoon. But that takeaway never sparked the momentum swing the Commanders needed, and Hurts answered every Washington push with another chunk play. Once the Eagles stacked touchdown drives in the middle of the game, the margin ballooned and the outcome was effectively settled.
