In a thrilling Week 1 matchup of the 2026 season, the New Orleans Saints dominated the Detroit Lions with a final score of 49-28. This victory sets the tone for the Saints as they look to establish themselves early in the season, while the Lions will need to regroup after a disappointing start. Tyler Shough was the standout performer for New Orleans, throwing for an impressive 385 yards and tossing six touchdown passes, showcasing his ability to lead the offense effectively. Travis Etienne Jr. added a solid ground game with 58 rushing yards, while the Lions' Jameson Williams made an explosive impact in the air with 197 receiving yards, keeping Detroit competitive despite the loss. Defensively, the Saints were able to make crucial plays, highlighted by Kool-Aid McKinstry's interception, which shifted momentum in their favor. The Lions' defense struggled to contain Shough, and despite Derrick Moore's lone sack and Kelvin Joseph's five tackles, they couldn't generate enough stops to mount a comeback. The turning point came when New Orleans scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter, putting them firmly in control of the game.
