In a hard-fought season opener, the Chicago Bears narrowly defeated the Carolina Panthers by a score of 14-6, setting the tone for the 2026 season. Both teams showcased their defenses, but it was the Bears who ultimately capitalized on key moments to secure the victory. Rex Grossman led the Bears' offense with a touchdown pass, while Thomas Jones contributed on the ground with 45 rushing yards. The standout performance came from Stevonne Smith of the Panthers, who racked up an impressive 197 receiving yards, but it wasn't enough to put points on the board. Jake Delhomme threw for 297 yards, showcasing his ability to move the ball, but the Panthers struggled to finish drives in the red zone. Defensively, the Bears were anchored by Mike Brown, who recorded five tackles, and Charles Tillman, who made a significant impact with two interceptions. The turning point came in the second half when Tillman picked off Delhomme, halting a promising Panthers drive and allowing the Bears to maintain their slim lead. With both teams showcasing their defensive prowess, the Bears' ability to create turnovers proved decisive in this tightly contested matchup.
